The magpie/Pica pica

main image decoration

43.

Magpies are birds of the Corvidae (crow) family, including the black and white Eurasian magpie, which is considered one of the most intelligent animals in the world, and the only non-mammal species able to recognize itself in a mirror test.

The magpie is omnivorous, eating young birds and eggs, small mammals, insects, scraps and carrion, acorns, grain, and other vegetable substances.

In Europe, magpies have been historically demonized by humans, mainly as a result of superstition and myth.

In Lithuanian folklore the magpie is seen as a thief.

The Eurasian magpie is believed not only to be among the brightest of birds, but among the most intelligent of all animals.

Please, listen to their singing below.
